Abstract

Clothing is the clothes used to cover and protect the body. In addition, the clothing also has a function as a cultural symbol and identity attached to the outfit. Each country has its traditional clothes. In addition to being a characteristics of identity, clothing also manifest the value of the culture and norm of each country. One type of clothing, although have the same form, but sometimes has a reflection of different public cultural values for each country. Sarong, for example. In Indonesia, the sarong becomes one of the fashion that is often used in official events and religious rituals. This is different with Egypt, where the use of sarongs at large time events are considered unethical or less polite. Egyptians tend to use sarongs as home apparel like to sleep, to the bathroom, or even a man who wore  sarong is identified by “having done a husband and wife relationship”. This research aims to examine the different aspects of the sarong fashion culture between Indonesia and Egypt. The purpose of this research is to find out why and what factors influence the difference in meaning in the use of the sarongs. The theory used in this research is semiotic cultural with quantitative method.
